My questions for the week......

Hello Everyone -
I am on spring break this week - yahoo!! Spring is just a step away!
Hey - Is anyone planning to attend the six day residency this summer?
I would love to have the chance to meet some of you then.
Blogs are fun and Skype is ok also, but it would be nice to say hello in person.

Ok - my questions for the week are: Has anyone used blogging with their students? Have you met any resistance from your school/administration in the use of blogs with students? This has been a problem for me. How were you ableto manage to overcome the obstacles in getting the administration to see the value in this technology?

Hi Debora-

Yes, my physics students will be doing a new bloggling project on one topic each week. We start after spring break (next week) on March 31. You can check out their blog on http://www.msederil.blogspot.com

I used the letter in our book to submit to our administration. The letter spells it all out in very good language. Check it out.

Hi Pamela-
That is wonderful that you have the opportunity to use this technology with your students. I will check out the letter in the book, however I do not think it will do much good with the current administration I have. They are so far out of touch with technology use that I know I am going to be met with the same resistance. Our principal is suppose to retire at the end of the year. This might then open the doors to changes for next year. I will check out the blog you are using for your physics classes. Thanks for the site address.
Happy spring break.

Pam,
I think that my administration would be fine with blogging. The problem is that our children we service do not have access to a computer at home or at school. We usually only have one computer per classroom and we are packed with 31 students per class. This makes things rough. We do have a Wiki and the teachers enjoy using it.

My administration's concern in middle school using blogs outside blackboard is that it opens them up to potential internet predators. I want to do it, because it makes it easier for us to include outside experts as part of our courses. I thought this webs blog might be the answer, but it is letting me post to anywhere as long as I have an account. I just have to navigate through other people's blogs to get there.

Sarah and Rachel-
Thanks for the reply.
I have also faced the problem of having too few computers and too many students. We have a mibile lap top system that is nearly five years old. You can only imagine how functional that system is after five years of use and how slow it must be. Also the threats of child predators is another concern making it tough to muddle through the problems of access to technology.
Thanks for your comments.

Hi Deb,

I will be at the residency this summer in Minn. This will be my last.

As for blogging, I had to request from the IT people to unblock the word "blogging" from our filtering software on the server to do any blogging. I told them that it was for only educational purposes. They agreed when I gave them specifics on how I was going to use blogging.
